Beng Natthawut Yuenyong (NL/TH)
Beng Yuenyong was born in Bangkok, Thailand, but moved to the Netherlands at a young age. He grew up in The Hague and graduated in 2017 from the ArtScience department (BA) at the Royal Academy of Art. Raised in a Thai household, his mother introduced him to Buddhist temples in the Netherlands, where he engaged with Thai culture and Buddhism.
As he grew older, he balanced his Thai heritage with Dutch culture, discovering art and science in school. Despite living in the Netherlands, he frequently visits Thailand, observing the impact of technology, consumerism, and globalization on Thai religious practices. His work explores identity and cultural duality, connecting Buddhism, artificial intelligence, and 3D printing as both inspiration and production method.
His art blends Asian futurism, pop culture, and religion. Notable works include He is a Blessed One (2022), a 3D-printed sculpture based on a Thai temple window, optimized through AI simulations. The piece features red epoxy, resembling blood, along with braided textiles and plastic flowers, common in Thai altars.
Beng Yuenyong explores multicultural identity in his work. Where he looks at intersections in the integration of technology and tradition, reflecting the evolving nature of Thai spirituality.
His work also examines globalization's influence on Thai religion, evident in Bangkok shopping malls that incorporate prayer spaces. The paradox of commercial spaces embracing spiritual elements highlights the fusion of local beliefs, economic systems, and technology.
Western and Thai interpretations of the sublime inform his practice. He studies religious iconography and the role of artificial intelligence as a new manifestation of the sublime. Scientists speculate AI may lead to a technological singularity, akin to Buddhist nirvana, where consciousness transcends physical existence. This theme connects to his use of 3D printing, echoing self-replicating machines and the Buddhist concept of reincarnation.
Beng Yuenyong’s work navigates the intersections of spirituality, technology, and identity, offering a contemporary perspective on cultural transformation.
