Lene Baadsvig Ørmen (NO)
Lene Baadsvig Ørmen (b. 1984) holds an MFA from Oslo National Academy of the Arts and a BFA from Bergen Art Academy (dep. of photography).
Ørmen’s sculptural practice creates a condensed atmosphere involving both fictional narrative and material exploration. Oscillating between two-dimensional reliefs and three-dimensional sculptures, figurative motifs linger as shadows in abstract forms. By exploring ancient sand casting techniques and the autonomous agency and properties of metals, she allows the materials themselves to play an active and indispensable role in the process and incorporates this into new idioms.
She often ask questions regarding hierarchies, material culture and what it means to be a human as a species among a biological diversity of life. Her work invite us to reflect upon a cyclical notion of time, as well as conceptions we have concerning the natural and the artificial. Dealing with philosophical, non-religious aspects of spirituality Ørmen aim to create space for introspection that transcends the boundaries between different belief systems. This with the intention of highlighting substance that can exist alongside an anthropocentric view, a feeling of cohesion, both with the surroundings and within oneself.
